Leading with Safety Recognition
While spotting for a test pit excavation, teammate Frank Roark observed a bolt laying on the ground directly below where the CAT 420 backhoe had been sitting. He immediately notified the operator and assisted to inspect the machine to see if the bolt has come loose from the piece of equipment. As a result, it was discovered that a bolt from a bracket on the backhoe had come loose and fallen out. If this was not noticed in a timely manner, the main pin connecting the boom to machine frame could have fallen out of place and allowed the boom to become free, damaging hydraulic lines and/or striking nearby personnel. Good work spotting for not only the excavation but also for any potential equipment deficiencies.
